fREE Clean Drinking Water
FREE DRINKING WATER
The invention of Water Fountains was a long time ago. In fact, according to research provided by Thames Water in 1872 there were 300 water fountains and this number rose by 1879 to 800 water fountains across London.
#OneLessBottle is an initiative launched in 2019 in partnership with the Mayor of London that has reintroduced the concept of FREE Drinking Water by installing water refill stations in publicly accessible places across the city. The aim was to install 100 drinking water access points across the city. By late 2021 it was reported that 90 fountains had already been installed with plans on track to install 60 more bringing the total number to 150.
There are a number of similar initiatives across the world. Places that recognize the importance of clean, drinking water. In spite of the expectation or culture of the modern, commercial world of having to buy everything that we need including clean drinking water.
Access to clean drinking water is actually a civil, human right that we all should maintain. No one is supposed to be made to pay for the privilege of clean drinking water. However we live in a world where civilization has meant a lot of things have changed and modernist attitudes neglect to take account of where we have digressed.
Here in the Land of "Wood and Water" as it is coined. It seems that the provision of clean drinking water is only a privilege provided for those who can afford to pay. And still in 2023 the provision of water, in some areas particularly, is a perpetual issue that is yet to be properly addressed.
Even during this global crisis and subsequent recession there seems to have been little or no review of our provision of clean water for drinking purposes, even in the height of a pandemic. The only significant change I have noticed is the increase of Water Refill stores that have opened recently. These places provide the most economical prices for purified and alkaline water refills.
