Racism backed by "Emojism"?
"Emojisms"
Its been a while now since I first commented on this issue with the Emojis on my regular What's app installed on my phone. I have decided to title this issue “Emoji Isms” as it seems to translate in to some type of cyber Racism where only certain Emojis are enabled to change colour or skin tone and this is of course a reasonable limitation. As we cant expect every single instance to be perfectly illustrated in the appropriate colour of our choosing or that we personally most relate to.
What concerns me is when I noticed that the Emojis for family images are only available in one colour?! I found that the hand gestures, the action emojis for dancing, for running, kneeling, and Mermaids. Ninjas, Royalty, all manner of symbols; even for the disabled characters are enabled with different complexions. However the Emojis for families are all static and they only change in variation of different type of sexual orientation! This caused me to think deeply about our rights to have a family as people of different races and skin tone?
If the rights of persons who use social media who are alternative from the “norm” in their sexual orientation, if the disabled have rights to be represented in this forum. Then surely people of different races should be allowed to have a representation in Emoji form, for their families?
How is it that persons who raise children in single parent, same sex households of all varying modern representations of the current accepted norms are allowed to be represented here?
Still the black, asian, mixed race and “other” racial variations are not readily accepted and represented. I think it would be fair to generalise, that these images would be deemed more important. Furthermore, more commonly utilised by most persons, who use the space to communicate and that regularly use What's app messenger to send and receive messages.
The images of dancers, ninjas, angels particularly are less commonly used and therefore less vital to be offered in their alternative formats.
Although this is not a priority issue in comparison to global issues of war, the ongoing global crisis, the quest for world peace and many other mainstream issues of concern. Still the attitude towards the families of black and minority groups has for many years been overshadowed by other seemingly more important matters.
Still most of us would agree that we should put our families first in our priorities. Its a common fact that most people are motivated by the need to provide for, cater to and make our family lives more comfortable. Therefore it would be fair to assume that everything, the basis of many of our issues, conflicts and even wars between opposing sides starts within our homes, within our family settings.
How is it that we have for so long overlooked these issues of our family conditions and conditioning. To the extreme that we are now being depreciated in the virtual world by our lack of representation by graphical images commonly known as Emojis. Is this really a new type of “ism” to consider? I ask the question as Racism is still a major issue of concern, and causes many serious conflicts, is it now being backed by Emojisms?!
